Nicknames for Safeways in Washington, DC

  • Subterranean Safeway — Underneath the Watergate. I think this may also be known as the:
  • Senior Safeway since lots of old folk live in the Watergate (Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, for example)
  • Soviet Safeway — 17th and Corcoran, my Safeway, because there are long lines and empty shelves
  • Social Safeway — Wisconsin Ave, because apparently the straights go there for some sort of mating ritual
  • Secret Safeway — Somewhere on 20th St? I dunno where exactly, there’s no sign
  • Spanish Safeway — Columbia Heights/AdMo. Guess why!
  • Southwest Safeway — In SW, duh
  • Not-so-Safeway — Southeast ghetto
  • Sixties Safeway — Georgia Ave, looks straight out of the ‘60’s apparently.

Not-so-safeway indeed! I saw a girl with her hand in her purse clutching pepper spray walking down the the frozen food aisle.
